MONARCH PLEDGES SUPPORT TOWARDS CHILD RIGHTS LAW IMPLEMENTATION By Rekpene Uket
The Chairman, Cross River State Traditional Rulers Council, His Royal Majesty, Ovai Elder Solomon Osim Edward has pledged his maximum support towards the implementation of the Cross River State Child Rights Law.
The Monarch made the commitment during an Advocacy Visit by members of the State Child Rights Law Implementation Committee led by the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Hon. Edema Irom to his office in Calabar.
Ovai Elder Solomon Edward reiterated his passion and commitment towards the welfare of children as well as their Rights, hence, he would not hesitate to give his full support towards the implementation of the Cross River State Child Rights Law.
The Chairman, Traditional Rulers Council also informed the committee that the Council will meet in April,2025. He offered to give members of the committee an opportunity to address the Traditional Rulers on the provisions of the Child Rights Law.
Speaking earlier, the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Hon. Edema Irom who led the team stated that the purpose of the visit was to brief the Monarch on the capacity building workshop which was organized for members of the state child rights implementation committee at Ogoja in which the Traditional Institution was duly represented, noting that, the workshop was to acquaint members of the committee with adequate knowledge of the provisions of the Child Rights Law, Child Labour, Child Protection as well as Remediation Programmes for effective implementation of the Law.
The Commissioner decried the alarming rate of urchins roaming the streets of Calabar as well as the increased rate of Child Labour in Cocoa producing communities in the state with particular reference to Ikom, Etung and Boki Local Government Areas.
Hon. Irom acknowledged that the Child Rights Law has already been passed but the challenge is the implementation. She also admitted the fact that the committee could not go far without the blessings and support of traditional institution. On that note, she sued for the support of the Chairman, Traditional Rulers Council.
Other members of the committee present at the visit include; the State Coordinator, Child Protection Network (CPN) Nigeria, Mr Kebe Ikpi, the Director, Child Development, Ministry of Women Affairs, Mrs Felicia Otu as well as a representative from Basic Rights Counsel Initiative, Mr Charles Okon.
