Day of the Girl Child 2024
Today, as we celebrate the girl child – an embodiment of present realities and future hope, we celebrate not only the achievements of women but also the limitless potentials of girls, who are our future leaders, innovators, and change-makers. This year’s theme, “the Girls Vision for the Future” is apt as it gives us the opportunity to envision the future that we all, including our girls, will walk into.
When I think of the future, I see a world where every girl is empowered to dream big and pursue those dreams without fear or limitation. Imagine a society where access to education is universal and girls no longer face barriers based on their gender. This is a future where every girl has the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive — where her voice is not just heard, but valued. Education is the key that unlocks doors to opportunities. It equips girls with knowledge and skills, enabling them to contribute to their communities and the world. But we must do more than just provide access; we must foster environments where girls feel safe, encouraged, and inspired to pursue their passions. This means creating inclusive spaces in classrooms, supporting female mentors, and celebrating achievements — no matter how small.
In my vision for the future, I see girls breaking barriers in fields traditionally dominated by men. This part of the vision is with us now. Imagine young girls coding the next big app, leading ground breaking research, or designing sustainable solutions to combat climate change, end poverty, Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) and Violence Against Children (VAC). We need to inspire curiosity and creativity in every girl, empowering them to become the architects of a better tomorrow. We envision a world where girls uplift each other, fostering a culture of collaboration rather than competition. This means building networks of support, mentorship, and sisterhood. Together, we can amplify our voices, advocate for change, and challenge the status quo. The strength of this collective vision is unstoppable. We envision a world where girls can walk freely, without fear of violence or harassment. A world where their voices are amplified, and their choices respected.
We dream of a future where STEM fields are not male-dominated, but inclusive and diverse. Where girls can code, innovate, and solve problems without barriers. We see a future where girls' health and well-being are prioritized. Where reproductive rights are protected, and mental health is supported. This vision is not just a dream; it's a reality we can create; we will create it. To achieve this future, we must: - Break down patriarchal norms and stereotypes - Challenge policies and laws that restrict girls' rights - Invest in girls' education and economic empowerment.
We must also address the social and cultural barriers that still exist. We envision a world where harmful stereotypes are dismantled, where girls are not judged by their appearance but celebrated for their talents and intellect. It is crucial to involve boys and men in this dialogue thereby promoting gender equality as a shared responsibility. Change begins with conversations—let's teach respect, empathy, and kindness to all. The banishment of a 16 year old child in Akparavon, Ikom Local Government Area comes to my mind. We commend the steps taken by the Honourable Commissioner, Ministry of Women Affairs, Hon. Edema Irom, No child should be banished for any reason. Banishing a person is akin to stripping them of their identity (this is an indirect way of saying the person does not exist) and perpetuators should be treated as murderers. We will work with all stakeholders to ensure that children are safe and protected in our communities.
In our future, we must also prioritize mental health and well-being. The pressures faced by girls today are immense, and it’s vital to create supportive environments where they can thrive emotionally and mentally. We need to destigmatize mental health discussions, ensuring that every girl knows she is not alone and that seeking help is a sign of strength.
On Wednesday, 9th October, 2024 a 47 year old Ita Okon was sentenced to life imprisonment for committing the offence of rape against an eight year old girl. This judgment is celebrated because it was handed down by my Lord, a woman (once a girl), after the defendant was found guilty. It is also a testament that no matter how long it takes, survivors of Violence will get justice. I commend everyone who worked tirelessly on this case. From the Case Workers at the various NGOs that interfaced with the case, the Police for diligent investigation, the Ministry of Social Welfare and Community Development, the Judiciary, the Assessors of the Family Court and all partners who worked to ensure that the girl child got justice. We won because we worked as a team. Thank you for your selfless service.
As we look ahead, let us commit to building a future where every girl can envision her own path, where ambition knows no bounds, and where dreams are not limited by societal expectations. We have the power to create this future, but it requires our collective effort.
So, to every girl out there: dream boldly, act fearlessly, and know that your vision matters. And to us all, let us be the allies and advocates who lift those dreams into reality.
Together, we can turn the vision of empowered girls into a vibrant, thriving future for all.
Thank you.
