BISHOP DR. EYOANWAN OTU COMMENDS HELLO INTERNATIONAL'S MEDICAL INTERVENTION IN CROSS RIVER STATE.By: Rekpene Uket.

Her Excellency, the wife of the Executive Governor of Cross River State, Bishop Dr. Eyoanwan Bassey Otu has commended Hello International, a Non- Governmental organization for their medical intervention programme organized recently at the General Hospital, Calabar.
A comprehensive survivor -centred medical intervention that provides free surgical repairs for obstetrics fistula -(VVF/RVF) and a holistic support that restores dignity of women through rehabilitation, economic empowerment and integration of survivors into the society.
   
Bishop Dr. Eyoanwan Otu who was ably represented by her Special Adviser on Programmes, Apostle Queen Eton gave the commendation during a Symposium organized recently by Hello International through the She Matters Initiative in partnership with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), World Health Organization (WHO) as well as the Government of Cross River State at the State Library, Calabar.
   
The wife of the Governor appreciated the founder of Hello Int'l, Dr. Nkiruka Agbezue for choosing Cross River State for the medical intervention describing the programme as apt and timely adding that, it alignes with the objectives of her Humanity Without Borders Initiative.
  
On that note, Bishop Dr. Otu welcomed participants to the symposium, commended all the partners and pledged the the support of the Cross River State Government towards the success of the programme.
   
Earlier in her welcome address, the founder of Hello Int'l and She Matters Initiative, Dr. Nkiruka Agbezue welcomed all participants to the programme stating that, the objectives of her organization is to be a voice for women, a source of hope for the broken and a bridge to a better future for generations to come.
   
Dr. Agbezue informed that Project Restore Cross River State Women's Dignity Initiative is a women's health and wellbeing programme which provides obstetrics fistula repairs, rehabilitation, economic empowerment and reintegration of survivors into the society.
 
Dr. Nkiruka Agbezue also commended the Cross River State Government for their support and for providing the enabling environment for her to carry out the medical intervention, promising to visit the state again and again adding that, together, we can put an end to obstetrics fistula and restore dignity to women and girls.
  
In a goodwill message, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Dean of Commissioners for Women Affairs in Nigeria, Hon. Edema Irom who was ably represented by the Director Women Development, Ministry of Women Affairs, Mrs Monica Udam commended the organizers of the programme, noting that, women and children are the core mandate of her Ministry, she therefore pledged the support of her Ministry to any Programme that promotes the health and wellbeing of Women , restoring hope and dignity to women and children in Cross River State.
  
On that note, she encouraged participants to participate effectively in order to learn, unlearn and relearn.
   
In their separate goodwill messages,WHO representative, Dr. Rebecca Olatunde, the Commissioner Ministry of International Donor Coordination, Dr. Hippolatus Lukpata who was represented by Princess Ekaete Okon as well as the Director General, Primary Healthcare Development Agency, Dr. Vivian Otu commended the vision that recognizes dignity and care for women and children, called on all relevant stakeholders; Traditional Institutions, Religious Leaders, Traditional Birth Attendants, Civil Society Organizations, Medical Students, Nurses/Midwives, Secondary School students etc to work together in their shared commitment to end obstetrics fistula, restore dignity to women and transform lives by encouraging pregnant women to go to the right sources to take delivery of their babies as well as timely referrals of prolonged labour to secondary and tertiary health care facilities.
   
The event also featured a key note Medical Lecture on "Understanding Fistula Management, Prevention and Hope" delivered by Dr. Etim Effiong Ayi, Plastic/Obstetrics Fistula Surgeon in the General Hospital, Calabar.
  
Highpoint of the event was the presentation of dignity packs which contains, disposable and reusable sanitary pads as well as toiletries and a book written by Dr. Nkiruka Agbezue's daughter, Ugoji to participants.

The Chairman, Cross River State Traditional Rulers Council, His Royal Majesty, Ovai Elder Solomon Osim Edward has  pledged his maximum support towards the implementation of the Cross River State Child Rights Law. The Monarch made the commitment during an Advocacy Visit by members of the State Child Rights Law Implementation Committee led by the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Hon. Edema Irom to his office in Calabar. Ovai Elder Solomon Edward reiterated his passion and commitment towards the welfare of children as well as their Rights, hence, he would not hesitate to give his full support towards the implementation of the Cross River State Child Rights Law. Nigeria’s House of Representatives step down NGOs, CSOs regulatory bill

  The House of Representatives on Thursday resolved to step down the consideration of the bill for an Act to establish a regulatory agency for Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs). The bill seeks to regulate the promotion of social development activities in Nigeria and for related matters, sponsored by Chairman, House Committee on Water Resources, Hon. Sada Soli.  In his lead debate, Hon. Soli observed that the bill seeks primarily to establish the Agency to ensure NGOs as well as CSOs live up to their full potentials of societal development, as well as coordinate private-public development partnership.  He stated that the Agency will also ensure that these NGOs and CSOs are well regulated and managed to ensure they do not abuse the room for their performance in favor of unwholesome practices.
